This bank holiday weekend saw an invasion of computer game players into Telford as a festival took place which not only tapped into players' favourite pastime, it also provided the opportunity to win up to £50,000 in prize money.
Shropshire was the venue for the Multiplay Insomnia festival which saw enthusiasts braving the wet weather to camp overnight and battle it out for the top prizes in a number of gaming tournaments.
At a time when money is at a premium for many people, the gamers going to the tournament had the best of both worlds - the opportunity to indulge in their hobby with fellow hardcore fans as well as possibly earning some money at the same time.
The four day event saw more than 3,000 computer geeks attend, many lugging their own kit along, but other used the PCs on offer by the centre. Estimates suggest that in total more than 2,000 computers were in use over the festival, with more than 5,000 visitors. The event attracted not just UK fans, but global enthusiasts, with some gamers travelling from as far as Brazil for the chance to make some money whilst playing.
The event is one mega, multi-player battle with a number of different cash prizes on offer, ranging from £750 to £15,000. The total amount of prize money available for the festival was £50,000, the biggest pot which has ever been seen at an Insomnia event.
Described as the 'Glastonbury of Gaming' the festival attracted not just those who wanted the chance to play and win some money, but also those who simply enjoy watching the spectacle unravel. Spectators were able to gain access to the gaming halls for £5 per day.
The event also featured the Anthony Nolan leukaemia charity, which is supported by Multiplay and gamers were given the chance to sign up to the bone marrow register.
